Robert Bailey

has appeared in PRT mainstageproductions of Charles Mee’s BIG LOVE (Piero/Leo), David Rabe’s A QUESTION OF MERCY (Dr. Chapman), Frank Wedekind’s LULU (Schon), and Anton Checkhov’s IVANOV (Ivanov). In the Co-Op, he sang in the cabaret LOVE SONGS, HATE SONGS, and acted in SHADOW OF A GUNMAN and BLOOD AND MILK. He also coordinated the New Works Project of play readings and directed the workshop of New York playwright Laura Censabella’s POSING.

Television work includes the PBS series BY THE PEOPLE and appearances on NYPD BLUE and THE GUIDING LIGHT, and film work includes the award-winning short ROSA. On the New York stage, Mr. Bailey appeared as Father Mosely in William Hathaway’s BLESS ME FATHER, as Jimmy in Susan Charlotte’s DELICATE CHOICES, and sang in the musical revue A JEROME MOROSS SAMPLER. Regionally, he played Fred/Petruchio in KISS ME KATE, Sir Toby Belch in TWELFTH NIGHT, and The Host in CANTERBURY TALES at the Colgate Summer Theatre, and sang in the Williamstown Theatre Festival late night cabaret. He began his career at the Washington Theatre Laboratory in Washington, D.C., acting in experimental productions based on the works of Tennessee Williams, Bertolt Brecht, Hans Christian Andersen, John Hawkes and Ted Hughes.

Mr. Bailey has taught and directed at UCLA, Brown University, U.C. San Diego and USC. He was educated at Brown University and received a Samuel Arnold Fellowship for study at the Polish Laboratory Theatre with Jerzy Grotowski. He has studied acting and directing with Frank Corsaro, Marilyn Fox, Gar Campbell and Anthony Abeson, voice with Frederick Wilkerson, singing with Carolyn Mignini, and film directing with Jim Pasternak. He is the author of the screenplays DOUBLE BACK and BABYLON.
